Two Bulgarian Round Shields

These shields are characteristic for the Balkans and byzantine empire in the time of the Second Bulgarian Tsardom – XII-XIVth century.

Material – rawhide, plywood, linen, acrylic paints.

  1. Guys, a question – if I am observing correctly, those shield are with a central handle under the boss. Were there round shield of this size with straps?

    • Actually the green one is with straps, the red/yellow one has both center grip and straps. Probably both variants were available back then. Judging from images from the XIIth- XIVth centuries the straps were preferred, or at least more frequent
